History ofEnamel
Enamel, also porcelain enamel, was originally used for glass coloring and ornamenting the surface of metals. Enamel first appeared in ancient Egypt, followed by Greece. Wire enamel, cutted decoration enamel, basse taille enamel, translucent enamel and painted enamel were successively introduced in Europe around the 6th century. In China enamel began to be developed around the 8th century. By the end of 14th century, enamel crafting/production had become highly advanced. The most well-known Chinese cloisonné pieces, also known as Jingtai Blue, are from the reigns of the Jingtai Emperor (1450–57) in the 15th century. At the beginning of the 19th century cast iron enamel was invented in Europe, which laid the foundation to convert enamel products from craftwork to daily necessity. Due to backward cast iron technology at that time, its application was rather limited. In the mid-19th century sheet steel enamel emerged during the fast development of all kinds of industries. It was considered as the beginning of a major epoch of modern enamel. The enamel industry is greatly promoted with various enamels of different performances introduced, sheet steel and other metal materials applied practically and refractory material, kiln and coating technology upgraded constantly.
